Top officials in Clarksdale, Mississippi are in early talks with studio executives to hold a public screening of Ryan Coogler’s movie ‘Sinners’. They want to hold the screening in the town due to the lack of active movie theaters. This update came after Tyler Yarbrough, a local activist wrote a letter to Coogler, Michael B. Jordan and the remaining crew to visit their hometown. This made a lot of headlines last week and hyped up ‘Sinners’ more. Keep on reading to know more about this interesting development.
Discussions with Top Executives at Warner Bros.
The local activist, Tyler Yarbrough also confirmed with USA Today on May 6 that he and the mayor have had various discussions with the top executives at Warner Bros. They discussed how they want to potentially screen the movie ‘Sinners’ to the area in the near future. But they also said that there are no solid plans at the moment regarding this.
He said ‘Nothing is set in stone, not even the date or location’ and also added that they are in the conversation stages despite all the reports. The activist further said ‘I want us to co-create something with Warner Bros. that feels both authentic and good for both them and our community.’
His Petition Gained Thousands of Signatures
Yarbrough, the local activist, was an organizer since high school. He was born and completed his education in Clarksdale. The town is located 155 miles northwest of Jackson, Mississippi. He loves multiple things about his place, including the talent, the possibilities, the people, and the dreams.
Though Clarksdale has an estimated 14,000 people, it has no active movie theaters. They were either shut down or transformed for some other work. This is why Yarbrough had to travel miles to watch the ‘Sinners’ movie after it was released. After having discussed with the residents, he began his petition that has accumulated around 6,000 signatures during publication.
The City of Clarksdale Supports the Public Screening
In this letter, the activist made it known how the visit by the cast members of ‘Sinners’ will bring further light to the history and legacy of Clarksdale. Besides the public screening, he said that they could also visit community staples like Ground Zero Blues Club (co-owned by Morgan Freeman) and the Red Luke’s Joint.
He said ‘I believe there must be a screening , but also believe that this can be something a bit more’. Yarbrough also hopes that it includes panel discussions led by the residents. Espy told USA Today that fully recognizes and backs Yarbrough’s efforts. Though an official date hasn’t been made yet, they want to hold the event before Juneteenth.
Wrapping Up
Though the Clarksdale community has come together wanting to see the public screening of the ‘Sinners’ movie, thanks to Tyler Yarbrough, a date is yet to be fixed. Espy said ‘I am really thankful that people like Tyler are there and that he cares about the community.’ With so much support, there is no doubt that the screening of Ryan Coogler’s movie ‘Sinner’ will be held in the town. The only thing to wait is the time and date to be fixed by the executives of Warner Bros.
