For the audience who still haven’t seen the new Thunderbolts movie, this is a spoiler. This latest Marvel movie featuring a list of anti heroes now has a new title. Just three days after its release, Marvel has begun Rebranding the name ‘Thunderbolts’ to ‘New Avengers’. Though this movie was advertised with its original title since its release, in the final scene, the main protagonists are given the name New Avengers. Keep on reading to know more about this unique title change.
Name Change in Social Media Accounts
In a surprising move, Marvel has begun changing the name of the movie in various places, including its social media accounts. To showcase this change, Marvel studio shared a video on the X platform where it reveals Pugh surrounded by her new co-stars ripping the ‘Thunderbolts’ poster revealing the title of ‘New Avengers’ underneath it. You can see the cast shouting New Avengers in the video but the shushing sound indicates that the video was recorded before the release.
Sharing of the New Movie Posters in Social Media
Marvel in another X post seemingly said that “the secret is out” by featuring the new version of the poster with an updated title. Soon after this, Fandango, Dolby and Imax also shared brand new posters featuring the new title ‘the New Avengers’ on their official X accounts. They did so while sharing the old poster with the altered name of ‘Thunderbolts’.
Besides that, ‘the New Avengers’ name also replaced the ‘Thunderbolts’ Title on one billboard. Marvel even went out to show Sebastian Stan walking up to the bus stop to swap the old movie poster with the new. The post credit scenes of the movie indicate the start towards Avengers 5.
A Rare Instance in Marvel Movie History
The change in movie title of the ‘Thunderbolts’ three days after its release marked a rare instance in Marvel’s history openly spoiling the end of its own film. The latest Thunderbolts movie debuted at $76 million at the domestic box office. Though it was a very good opening, a movie with the name ‘Avengers’ in the title might’ve got a better start.
The only thing that remains to be seen is whether the new marketing technique of changing the title will boost the ticket sales. It could do so by attracting attention from the casual fans who could be lured by the new name.
The Thunderbolts Director Speaks
The director of the movie, Jake Schreier, said the following regarding the name change ‘It felt like if Val is also trying to pull a switcheroo and sell the New Avengers to the world, we could do it too.’ He also explained more about this to the New York Times stating ‘ Especially given that the Asterisk has been in the movie for a year, hopefully it doesn’t feel sweaty, it feels like this was a plan and we built up to it’.
Other than that, the director also said ‘It was very fun that Marvel was open to embracing that’. He also added ‘it’s so interesting in this world and Kevin talks about this sometimes, where sometimes they wanted things to leak and they didn’t. I think we all assumed that it would be a bigger part of the conversation already, so it’ll be interesting to see what happens’.
Post Credit Scenes
In the post credit scenes of the movie, it was revealed that the New Avengers are living in the headquarters of the old Avengers, known as the Watchtower. It is also shown that they are in a legal battle with Captain America (Sam Wilson) over copyright issues over the Avengers logo. “Captain America: Brave New World” ended with Sam Wilson heading out on a mission to rebuild the Avengers.
You will once again see the ‘Thunderbolts’ cast back in action next summer during ‘Avengers: Doomsday’. This is likely where we will see the New Avengers team up with the old avengers and the Fantastic Four to take out the powerful Dr Doom which will be played by Robert Downey Jr.
Wrapping Up
The latest Marvel movie ‘Thunderbolts’ saw a unique change in Marvel Studios history when the title changed to the ‘New Avengers’. This is usually seen as a marketing strategy to boost ticket sales for the movie. Whether you like the title change or not, this is one hell of a movie that every Marvel fan should go and watch. The only thing fans are eagerly waiting for is to see if the new name change actually attracts more people to the theatres.
