Donald Trump’s success as the American President for the second time has been something that is inspirational and rare in the history of American politics. However, Mr. Trump’s re-election as the president raises many questions regarding the US’s relations with other countries. In fact, Mr. Trump’s decisions regarding international trade and citizenship of foreigners seem to be not so kind to those from other nations.
India is one of the countries that would not enjoy much benefits due to Trump’s decisions. This is mainly because of Trump’s new foreign policies which seem to make overseas trade with the USA less profitable. Trump’s policies are also aiming towards kicking out any person who is not of American descent. Because of all this, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has scheduled a meeting with the American President in February. Let us see what we can expect from this meeting and what its consequences mean for both nations.
Why Does Narendra Modi Want To Speak With Donald Trump?
After becoming the President for the second time, Mr. Donald Trump has promised to put 100 % tariff rates on imports coming from the nations which are a part of the BRICS group. This includes nations like Brazil, Russia, China, South Africa and, of course, India. Mr. Trump has also decided upon enacting certain policies that might not be in favor of Indians living in the USA.
First of all, Mr. Trump has decided to cancel the law that allowed the children of Indian origin people living in the USA to gain American citizenship automatically. Although the American President has not decided to cancel the H1b visa permanently which allows Indians to come to the US for work, he stated that this visa should not be used by Indians to gain citizenship in this country.
The American government has also identified more than 18000 illegal Indian immigrants living in this country. In fact, Donald Trump has decided to deport them as soon as possible. However, the number of illegal Indian immigrants seems far less than those who came from other countries like Mexico. In fact, due to Trump’s rather aggressive policies many Indians legally working in the USA are in danger of being identified as illegals and get thrown out of this country.
Because of all this, the Indian Prime Minister wants to speak to the American President in February. The Indian Prime Minister wants to know what kind of demands the American President needs to be fulfilled in order to reconsider his policies. The Indian government does not want to experience too many losses due to huge tax rates on products going from India to the USA. Hence, the Indian Prime Minister will try to offer any form of incentive or offer that might satisfy the American President.
The Indian Prime Minister also wants to negotiate with the American President regarding the citizenship of Indians living there. The Prime Minister wants to know if the American government can somehow reconsider its decisions regarding the citizenship of Indians living there legally and also know how to deal with the problem of illegal Indians living in this country. In fact, the nation wants to help the USA in deporting the illegal immigrants. However, the country wants the legal immigrants to not lose their future and careers in the US all of a sudden. And so Mr. Modi wants to negotiate with the American President in hopes that the latter might change their mind.
A Final Thought
It is unsure as to what the results of Mr. Modi’s meeting with Donald Trump will be like. If you look at Donald Trump’s promises, it is clear that he only wants to focus on what is good for his country even if it means ruining relations with other countries. In case of Mr. Modi, it is clear that he wants to talk peacefully with Mr. Trump and somehow make him change his current stance towards relations with India.
However, judging by Trump’s goals and attitude, it is highly unlikely that he will give in to the Indian Prime Minister’s demands. In fact, he might remain stern in his decisions. Hence, it is very uncertain as to whether the meeting’s results will even be in India’s favor or not.
