Pollution is one of the biggest concerns for every place in the world. Almost every nation is finding ways to reduce air, water or soil pollution. However, New Delhi has taken this problem to a new level. Delhi’s pollution levels have been a lingering issue.
This is because the city’s air pollution has reached levels which are terrifying. Such pollution levels might not be present anywhere else. Even Middle Eastern countries running everything on fossil fuels are cleaner than Delhi. I am making this comparison since Delhi is also close to a desert like some Middle Eastern areas.
But why is this the case? Is this happening simply due to overuse of fossil fuels? Or are the common people responsible for this?
So let us see why the pollution in this city seems to be an unsolvable problem. There might not be one but many reasons for this.
Reasons For Delhi’s Pollution
Currently air pollution seems to be the main problem in Delhi. The AQI levels for this city have crossed over 200. This is a very alarming situation indicating that something is very wrong. The list below shows what might be wrong in this city.
1. Too Much Use Of Vehicles
Delhi is one of those cities where people tend to use their own vehicles more. As a result, you can see a lot of personal cars or bikes on the city’s streets. This causes a lot of pollution in this city.
Most of the city’s residents often do not maintain their vehicles properly. Most people turn their vehicles on during traffic jams causing more pollutant emissions. The number of public transport is also few here unlike in other Indian cities. Hence, this is the primary reason for Delhi’s pollution.
2. Factories Not Using Sustainable Methods
Delhi is also the operating place for more than 9000 factories. These factories belong to companies like Maruti Suzuki and many others. The presence of these places is the reason for high employment rates in this city.
However, these factories are also responsible for causing too much pollution. The people managing these factories have no knowledge about eco-friendly production methods. They still use old-fashioned production methods that generate a lot of waste.
These include harmful emissions and chemicals polluting land and water. The managers also do not use any waste disposal strategy. And the government also turns a blind eye towards this issue.
3. Burning Practices In Nearby Areas
Another reason for Delhi’s pollution is the burning practices in nearby areas. This includes regions in UP, Haryana and Rajasthan which are close to the city. Many farmers here often burn useless crops or wood.
The result is immense smoke that often reaches Delhi. This also leads to even more air pollution as well. Unfortunately, the central and state governments have done nothing to resolve this issue.
Who Is Ultimately Responsible For the Pollution In New Delhi?
The heavy pollution in New Delhi is, without a doubt, the work of humans. Delhi’s government has done very little to provide cleaner public transport. The common public’s arrogance is also one of the main reasons for Delhi’s pollution.
This is mainly because most residents here prefer to show off their vehicles on streets. They mainly do this by driving when they do not need to do so. Unnecessary honking and not turning the engine off are plain acts of negligence by them. This has been a cause for noise and air pollution.
All this has been the reason for Delhi’s smog and many other issues. During winters Delhi’s air becomes still and the cool air causes fog formation. However, the presence of too much smoke in the air causes the fog to turn into smog.
This not only leads to accidents but also causes lung diseases among residents. However, the common people seem to be least bothered by this problem. Rapid and unchecked industrialization is also a reason for Delhi’s pollution.
Most politicians here allow industrialists to continue their activities to get profits. But they do not check how their processes are causing harm to the environment. The leaders and industrialists do not want to learn about sustainable waste management.

The above facts show that people are responsible for Delhi’s pollution. The people here include both politicians and common people. Delhi’s own location makes it even more prone to pollution.
This is mainly because it is a land-locked region with low wind speeds. The Thar desert’s presence nearby is already contributing to air pollution to an extent. This along with human errors is causing the problem to go out of control.
Rapid deforestation near Delhi is making the problem worse. If the pollution issue keeps lingering then one day the Thar desert will absorb Delhi. This will force all residents to leave the city.
